Reflections – This and That

Not everything is black or white, good or bad. We don’t always have to choose.

It need not be one thing or the other, this or that. We can occasionally ‘enjoy it all’.

Expanding our perspective of life by indulging in the freedom of not limiting ourselves through unnecessary choices is itself a choice.

Though society seemsĀ obsessed with getting us to take sides, make preferences, and so to speak be on one side of the river or the other, at times ‘this or that’ could also be ‘this and that‘.

Online activity can be coupled with offline action, neither automatically excludes the other. Winter or Summer? Let’s not forget Nature reserves some spectacular moments for Spring and Fall/Autumn. This or that? Or this and that?

Choosing to be ourselves is perhaps the greatest choice we can make.

In the words of Robert Fritz, “If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is compromise.”

As ever the choice is ours in as much as we choose to live aligned to our values, within the spheres of choices available to us.

If you’d like to share your thoughts on this and that, please leave a comment below. In any case, thanks for choosing to be here today.

Brian.

  1. Hi, great post! I love the implicit question that arises; how could you have both / all. Sometimes we have a belief we can’t or don’t deserve. Challenging our assumptions and thinking from different view points can give us evidence that these beliefs are unfounded.

Finally, I would like to pose another question, what will you gain by deciding to have? What will you lose?

      Hi Michael,

Great to see you here and thanks for your insightful input. You’ve brought up a number of interesting points, the examination of which will surely provide us with more learning and food for further reflection. Limiting beliefs do seem to abound throughout society today. Whilst it might feel safer to ‘play small’, we are perhaps cheating not only ourselves but also society in general by not choosing to be ourselves.

      Thanks again for sharing here.

      Brian.

  2. Hi Brian
I really enjoyed this post. I agree with you that the greatest choice we can probably make is to be ourselves, and yet it is something that many people struggle with. The many external influences that impact on our choices coupled with our own limiting beliefs often makes it difficult for people just to be themselves rather than the person they think they should be. I think too many people believe that they don’t have choices.

      Hi Beverley,

Thanks for connecting and sharing your ideas here. Indeed, the pressure to conform to the wishes/agendas of others seems to be an obstacle for many today. As coaches, by creating the setting for clients to shine the light on their choices we can help them see the potential they have and the options available to them right now.

      Kindest regards and thanks again.

      Brian.

Brian, I stumbled on your blog while researching why choosing is a choice. I liked your post, especially what you wrote about “Choosing to be ourselves is probably the greatest choice we can make”. I’m blogging quite a lot on the topic (now probably soon on choosing to be yourself), maybe you are interested: http://dubioblog.wordpress.com/
