Looking at the current economic situation it’s easy to feel life is all about restrictions at present. If we choose to follow news bulletins we can quickly become immersed in stories of state cutbacks, industrial decline, credit crunch woes and the like.
Bring into the picture job losses coupled with rising fuel costs and it may seem restrictions are no longer taking place on an abstract, gloabl scale but rather are local issues, regardless of where we are.
Without denying the pressure of the moment, I’d like to ponder the question of restrictions from another perspective. In what area of life are we placing restrictions on ourselves through our self-doubts? The classic quotation attributed to the ice hockey star Wayne Gretzky, “You miss 100% of the shots you never take”, sums up my thinking here.
Yes, it is difficult nowadays on many levels, therefore perhaps we need not add to the pain by being so tough with ourselves. What are we gaining by not making an effort? Pushing through our self-doubts and self-imposed restrictions today, even with only smal tentative steps, might just mean a brighter tomorrow.
