Looking the part

July 14, 2022

I know we should not ‘judge a book by its cover’ nor ‘jump to conclusions’. Even so, how do we feel when faced with a specialist who, for whatever reason, does not ‘look the part’?

The other day I was introduced to a gentleman set to provide maintenance work in the building. Although he had no appointment, he was here to introduce himself and inspect the property.

While taking in his words, I observed his socks, sandals, shorts and t-shirt. In fairness, excluding the socks and sandals, I was dressed the same as I had been writing blog posts in my home/office when called to the outside door to meet him.

Had he arrived in immaculately clean coveralls with the name of his company emblazoned on his chest or back, would the impact have been different to what it was in my mind?

How events play out, only time will tell. The first impact was what it was. Ideally, all will proceed smoothly, and the notion of looking the part remains merely that; a notion.

We shall see.
